"Mijo" is a term of endearment for a male family member. It originally comes from "mi hijo", meaning "my son"; however it has gradually been blended, and the meaning changed. Kind of like in English, we call our boyfriend/girlfriend "baby", but they in fact are not a baby, and not our children. "Mijo" is the same way- you can call your boyfriend or husband "mijo", and it's kind of like saying "baby", or "darling". It doesn't necessarily have to apply only to your son. Hope this helps!
