Without faith in something, which means some kind of spiritual belief, we couldn't even enjoy fairy tales. I think we all need fairy tales sometimes to escape this cold cruel world, but I don't fear death. Fear of death is a generalized anxiety disorder and can be treated if it gets in the way of living your daily life. I don't believe that the promise of an afterlife is just to keep us from fear of dying, as if we are Christians we have no fear of dying. All religions have their own particular beliefs and some believe in afterlife and some don't. If you are doubting your own religious principles, start reading about other choices or have your pastor teach you about how your religion believes. Perhaps that can clear up some of your doubts.

The premise is age old, and indeed hard to debate.

Fear is the natural and basal response to the unknown. The prospect of death is the greatest of all "unknowns". By contriving an answer for death, as religion does, the fear can be addressed. If you believe the "answer", whatever your religion tells you it is, the naturally disturbing and mysterious prospect of death becomes an event to anticipate.

Once you've accepted the answer, you must vehemently preach and defend your spirituality. If you can't prove to yourself that it's the one and only answer to the great unknown, your fear will not be abated.

In order to prove the validity of your accepted answer, you must try and disprove all of the other "answers". What does this lead to??? Hint: 3 letters, starts with a "w" and ends with an "r".

This mentality of escapism often has a broad and detrimental effect on mankind.

Having no fear of death and a disdain for all those who don't believe as yourself makes for a dangerous combination.

So you all here think that this is it, we just die and nothing is left. Just worm food?! I don't think so.
I believe there is a place we all go where we meet our loved ones again, our pets that have passed on, and many other spirits of love. Another dimension, so to speak.
Maybe it sounds like fairytales, but I like it and it beats thinking this is the only place where I'll live.

Some people believe that it's a coping mechanism so we don't go insane over a possible future of oblivion.

I buy into the afterlife deal.

Pretty much, yes. It's not a black-and-white issue, though. Cut-and-dried, I mean. There are those who escape death, but these are very rare.

Most of those same religions believe that there's both a Heaven and Hell. Hell is something to be more afraid of than just ceasing to exist IMO.

Nobody knows for sure but don't you wanna be safe just in case? It says in the Bible that Paul saw Heaven and he liked it so much that he didn't want to live anymore.
