It is always considered an honest mistake to misinterpret friendliness to affection. Human nature varies in so many ways particularly in the expression of feelings. The situation you are currently experiencing characterised the common notion for a person to appreciate another persons deed if it always meet his/her expectation. That notion seems to distort your perception that the guy cared for you when in fact he should have told you so a long time ago considering the span of time you have been with him. There are really people who find satisfaction treating good other person for the sake of intimate friendly relationship. Don't ever be fooled by your wrong perception and suffered the negative consequences. You seems to condition your mind that the guy have an affectionate feeling for you. This is just a normal product of constant companionship. Think about it.

Ask. If he is a good friend for five years he will tell you one way or another. If he likes you then you are ahead. If not and just a friend, then you are no worse off than now. And you will not have to wonder.

If you want an easy way, say something like:

Are you flirting with me or am I being vain and getting my hopes up?

Yes he's your friend, and after five years, that's all it will be, unless, you or he wish to change the status quo.
Seeing you know him that well, it's shouldn't be hard to ask that question of him.
Maybe if you didn't have a boyfriend, he'd make a move, who knows. Oh yeah, he knows, ask him hon, only way you will ever find out.

Does he touch you? Does he gaze into your eyes? Does he seem like he wants to be close to you? These are some of the ways you can tell if he's more interested in you. If he's not interested in you as more than a friend, then he will keep a physical distance from you, and there will be no sexuality in his presence.

I have friends like that. You can either ask him or watch carefully the look in his eye if your shoulder strap falls slightly. That will tell you right then and there.

I would risk it all and ask him like say "why do you do this"
If it don't work with that than ask him if he likes you
