Actually, the real answer is 'it doesn't matter much'.

On a typical multi leaf spring, the main is a certain length/arch. If you break one leaf on one spring, all you need to do is cut it apart, find a similar replacement, and put it in. Once you tighten the center bolt, that leaf matches the curve of the ones above & below it.

Now, if you break the 'main' spring, you probably want to replace the assembly on both sides to avoid leaning.

I just installed helper springs on a 99 GMC 1/2 ton and yes they were "bowed" about the same as the factory springs are

no, each leaf has a different dimension and curvature to handle the loads and to be able to be stable on the road in corners
