TRAIN service to western Richmond or to Newport News (a bus connects to Norfolk) --fairly expensive

AIR from Reagan National or BWI to Norfolk or Newport News (sometimes reasonable, sometimes expensive)

Bus to DC to Richmond to Norfolk (packed like sardines and they seldom run on time -- frequently a miserable experience).
If you take the bus, take METRO to the DC train station and walk 4 blocks to Greyhound.

That's it unless you rent a car.

Hitchhike. Sorry but unfortunately the public transport system is completely non existent on the east coast and what they do have is inadequate to say the least. You would think after Katrina some states would start improving public transport but it hasn`t. They should make an elevated high speed train or mass subway going along the coast of the US. from Boston to Miami stopping in all the major cities which could carry cars as well. But, I guess all the states and different agencies would want to make a profit instead of progress off it so it will never happen. Beijing builds a railway to Tibet and we don`t even have a decent train between DC and anyplace that is worth the money for the ticket and time. What`s up Americans? Aren`t you tired of paying so much for gas to sit at traffic lights? Also, it would probably cut drunk driving occurences in half because people ride instead of drive. Wake up people!

The University of Maryland is in College Park, Md and I am sure the students "know the way" to the beach. Check their web page or post a question directed to the students at U Md

Laracraft's answer is interesting - As Americans we will always love our cars and our guns - Nothing will ever change that. Public transportation is not successful (defined as recouping a significant percent of the operating expenses from the fare box) anywhere in the U.S. The U.S. Congress has consistently upgraded and subsidized the busiest travel corridor in the U.S. (Wash. D.C. to Boston) via Amtrack and its high speed rail bed and Acela trains. It has been a disaster and will probably fold in the next few years.

Unlike many Europeans and Asians, we Americans highly value our independence and our ability to come and go as we see fit - not when the transit agency decides to provide service.

when you're travelling on a daily basis for artwork there are countless concepts w/ commuter buses. There are commuter parking plenty scattered all alongside the major routes most excellent out of St. Mary's county. when you're speaking about a outing, there is not any public transportation to this area. There develop right into a Metro bus that got here from the metro station at branch Ave to Waldorf even if it stopped.

urbancoyote has it right as far as your options go. I would just add that air travel within Virginia is generally expensive because the airlines like to keep fares high to make a maximum profit from business travelers as long as low fare airlines are not making these short-haul trips. Amtrak is the best balance between cost and comfort, with café car service and free drinks in business class. Take Metro from College Park to King Street so you can board in Alexandria; the train runs slowly from Union Station, and the fare from ALX (the Amtrak station code) is slightly cheaper. ALX lies just across the rails from the King Street station, so the transfer is easy.
