I've been around animals all of my life and I am a strong believer that animals and humans have an understanding. If you're open to learning about them and respecting and loving them, you'll come to realize that not only do they understand you, you will soon understand what they are trying to communicate to you. It doesn't have to be a sound, but animals communicate with touch and instinct. So yes, I believe they can understand.. Unless the person is impatient and rude.

Well, dogs can't understand our language (human language). As best, they understand the way a particular word or command is spoken (the tone, the pitch, etc.) and try to do the action that they have been taught to do for that command.
I have experiemented with my dog and realised that if I speak a different word that sounds like the original command then he responded to that word also.

It's the sound of the word they become familiar with - like when you were in school and the sound of the bell ringing meant it was time to change classes. Dogs don't actually understand what the word "sit" means - they just recognize the sound of the word as it is being spoken and associate it when the action they are taught to do at the sound of it.

Strange you ask this question. Because I've often heard dogs don't really know the words, just the sounds we make synonymous with actions. Well, my dog knows when I am closing off a conversation on my cell phone before I close it shut. Whenever I say, "later." He heads to the door to go in. No reception inside. If I say O-U, then T, he knows its time to go out.

One of my dogs even understands when we SPELL the words.
Some dogs have been tested at a 700 word vocabulary..that is the approximate vocabulary of a bright kindergartner.

All training with dogs as with any animal comes with repetition. They understand what you are saying as long as it is the same over and over again.

I think that they will understand most words as long as keep up the communication between you and them.

I think they remember certain commands by the inflection of your voice.
