My dad used to have that. I remember they said it was little pockets sticking out of the intestine, and if you eat anything that has little seeds or grains (like corn) those things get stuck in those pockets and cannot pass through the intestine. That causes the pain.
Aspirin or Tylenol or some kind of pain reliever ought to help. Go on Wikipedia and ask about it. Good luck to you and your brother.

Treatment for diverticulitis focuses on clearing up the infection and inflammation, resting the colon, and preventing or minimizing complications. An attack of diverticulitis without complications may respond to antibiotics within a few days if treated early.

To help the colon rest, the doctor may recommend bed rest and a liquid diet, along with a pain reliever.

An acute attack with severe pain or severe infection may require a hospital stay. Most acute cases of diverticulitis are treated with antibiotics and a liquid diet. The antibiotics are given by injection into a vein. In some cases, however, surgery may be necessary.

Also, you might try getting him to eat some yogurt.....

This is an OLDDD!! remedy for this problem.. They use to in the GOOD ol daz--eat several tea spoons full of just plain ol' Vaseline or petroleum jelly--- It somehow coated the instants and gave relief from pain..... IT IS NOT A CURE.. just helps stop the food from sticking in the little bulges and helps.. .... Heard the old Cajun folks talk about it years ago

Very very strongly encourage him to adopt a very high fiber diet -- that means "hot" cereals like old fashioned rolled oats (not 'quick' oats), oat bran fraction and wheatena. You can make these with raisons or add chopped banana slices or blueberrys or other berries after it is cooked. (I put my raisons in "last" so they won't get too plump and soggy). You can also add water and stir in copious amounts of non-fat dried milk (which tastes fine in HOT cereal and has no fat to give him spasms).

Have him stay away from red meat and foods with a lot of fat in them (like ice cream and desserts).

If this DOESN'T WORK after about six weeks, he needs to see a gastro-enterologist who has the "marble" which can be injested and takes about 50,000 pictures as it goes through the small and large intestine. That'll pinpoint the problems.

If you live the the metropolitan Washington DC area, email me, I know a terrific gastro-enterologist in that area.

I've coplied a heap on Diverticulitis there.

also during a flare up, avoid high fiber diets they just irratate an already sensitive area, try low fiber easy to digest foods. even healthy smoothies. after the flare settles down then get back onto high fiber diets.
