I believe a marketing campaign actually coined the phrase SUV, or it could have been the News Media, because they are referred to on title as a "Utility Wagons", the "Sport" part of it came from adding leather and radios and so-forth.

The first recognized "UV" was probably the Willys since they won the design for the "Jeep" for the world war 2 contract. But all of the American car manufacturers made them for the same contract.

The Sport part I believe started popping in with the 1991 Explorer, and the Jeep Grand Cherokees of 1993. In those years they had both been redesigned, and included features such as leather and decent radios.

Those I believe are the ones that started the "Sport" in SUV.

I sold Chevy's some time back round 95, and when the new chevy Blazer came out most of them had leather, whereas the older box style you did not see to many of them.

Hope this changes the aspect.

hmmm. none of the three u mentioned. The first SUV is jeep wagoneer.

Sport utility vehicles were originally descended from commercial and military vehicles such as the Jeep and Land Rover.

The Jeep Wagoneer and the Ford Bronco were early SUV examples, followed by the Chevrolet Blazer and the GMC Jimmy. International Harvester also sold SUV's, notably the three-door International Scout and the five-door International Travelall.

The car company that first invented the SUV was Jeep. It was the late 1940s that brought us Willy's Jeep Wagon. In fact an advertisement for the Willy's Wagon once called it a "utility vehicle" for the family.

The original Jeep. Built for world war II. They were built by Willys Overland (became jeep I believe after the war) and Ford (yes ford built jeeps for the war effort to the same specs)

Of corse nobody called them SUV's until the last 10 years.

Jeep (then part of American Motors) brought out the "Wagoneer" four wheel drive station wagon around 1964 -- that was the first modern sport utility vehicle.
