We start off clean..lol.. My middle child is really bad about spilling things and wiping it on his shirt!!! It gets on my nerves. I noticed at his birthday party, all of the little boys and girls did that..lol.. So I guess it is normal. He is 8, I am sure when he finally gets interested in girls he will change his ways.
I dress the baby to a tee, and always bring extra clothing for her. My oldest daughter who is 15 has to look perfect right down to the curl.

i always put my daughter in clean cloths when we leave the house to go into public. but like all other kids she has a tendancy to find a way to get dirty between home and the store. the only way i can keep her clean is to just not give her a snack or a drink in the car. the snack part she can deal with but she gets cranky about not having a drink. i have a problem with my sister letting her kids run around all covered in nasty dirt and food too sometimes and i will mention it to her. her youngest is the worst she can get covered in stuff while inside a fairly clean house she looks like she took a bath in a mudpit. my sister says that she tries to keep her clean it just doesn't work.

My kids don't dress up in their church clothes to go out - but they are at least clean. I double check them over before we leave the house - if one forgot to comb his hair, we don' t leave until it's done. Good "peer pressure" too - because the other siblings are waiting.
I did have my kids go to this one after school program - the playground had gravel ground instead of grass. My children were so filthy when they were picked up - from all of that rock dirt! People would look at me funny if we had to make a pitstop to get some milk on the way home. I learned quick not to make any pitstops after, and get the milk beforehand. There's no way I could have them carry signs "my mom is a good mom, this is day care's fault..." I eventually had my kids stop going to that daycare!
So, it's more how they act than how they look. If they're well-behaved, then don't always assume it's the parents' fault. You don't know where those kids were before that place!
Manners are the most important thing to teach our children. Not only does it teach them to respect others, but to respect themselves.

I keep my kids clean and comfortable, but in their best? Come on they are kids. I also let them play in the mud when it rained. Of course they took baths afterwards and we didn't go anywhere looking that way except the time that it started to rain while the kids were playing soccer. The parents were all freaking out. It was 85 degrees outside. I just took a hose right there at the park and hosed the mud off and told them to strip in the van and gave them towels to wipe dry (I always keep extra clothes and towels in the back of the van for emergencies). We have fun and that's how it should be.

Yes I do! But unfortunately, he's either drooling like crazy or getting food all over himself or in his hair. If none of the above applies, he always finds someway to get messy! I love dressing him up, and he loves getting into mischief. All my efforts are usually worthless, but it's worth it (at least until we leave the house).

First, of all I believe if you make sure that your children look nice in public, then they would take care of themself when they are older. Your children are a reflection of you. So it is important that they are clean, well-mannered, and respectful. The way you carry yourself in society can get you futher in life. So why not start when they are young.

i do. not saying they need to be head to toe in an expensive outfit to run to the grocery store but there is nothing worse IMO than a kid in a filthy shirt, with dirt or food on it. I wouldnt take my child out that way.
