Even if it's safe to make a right turn on red, can I stop and wait until the light turns green? Is this ok or I will be issued a ticket for blocking /impeding the traffic? I am curious about this and I never tried this before. I live in Southern California :)

Ignore the people behind you. Accidents happen when you act hastily rather than out of your best judgement. Right turn on red is allowed by law, but you still must yield right of way. If you don't feel you can safely make the maneuver, you have that on your side of the law.

If it is legal to turn right on red and you can make the turn safely then turn. You will only make the drivers behind you angry if you wait for the green light. You may have all day to get somewhere but the person behind you may not.

As long as it is clear and theres no traffic coming you can turn right on a red why wouldnt you want to go, why wait for the green light remember there is people behind you who also want to go. It is ok to Turn right when traffic is clear on a red light.

You can totally wait for the light to turn green. Impatience is probably the number one cause of all accidents in the world. Check out www.safemotorist.com if you want to learn more about why you should wait and what it takes to be a safe driver.

I've gotten pulled over for not turning but got out of it. A cop pulled up behind me and I wasn't sure if I could do right on red so I waited next thing I know the light turns green and I turn and the cop puts his lights on and pulls me over. He said he wanted to check my insurance and registration. It was obvious to me he was looking to see if I had liquor or drugs on my breathe or in my car as he pushed his face thru my driver's side window to take a whiff and a quick look around. everything was clean and he let me go.

Depends upon your local laws. IIRC, it wasn't illegal to not turn right on red when I lived in CA, but it will likely piss off your fellow drivers.

That may be more of a concern than getting a ticket would in some areas - some people are impatient.

There is no law on the CVC to the effect that an officer can ticket you for this, but that doesn't make it okay. Be courteous to your fellow drivers, and go when you have a safe chance.

Its an OPTION, not a RULE. You CAN turn right on red after a stop if you WANT to. You dont HAVE to but I bet you will get honked at and cause road rage behind you. And why wouldnt you want to go if you could?

You can wait as long as you want to, everyone behind you might be a little pissed, but they don't issue tickets. So, don't worry.
