It's not that complicated
Kanji is Chinese characters. each kanji has its own meaning which is very inportant because the Japanese language has a lot of words that sound the same. Hiragana is used for Japanese words, particles, they are also used for word endings and some names, although Kanji can be used for names too. Katakana is used for foreign words (not just english words). All writing systems are used together in everyday writing.

all three are common in every day use.
Katakana is used only for loan words from other languages.
Hiragana and Kanji make up the basis of the Japanese language.
Many words for example are a mixture of both Hiragana and Kanji and of course all of the word conjugations are done with Hiragana.
If you wanted to function in daily society like a regular Japanese person you would need to know all three.
Most helpful for beginners is Katakana in my opinion because %90 of the loan words are English so you can kind of understand a bunch of things at restaurants and the like.

Hiragana is the basic Japanese alphabet used for Japanese words and names. Katakana is the same alphabet phonetically, but different characters. Katakana is used for foreign words, and sometimes to draw attention. Kanji are Chinese characters, generally the symbol has a meaning, rather than a letter having a phonetic sound. Most nouns, adjectives, verbs, etc.. are kanji.
If you were to read a Japanese newspaper, you will see all three types used together to form sentences.

three written Japanese languages...hiragana is like your ABC's, in Japanese. Katakana is a very similar set of ABC's, but this set is used to express English words and phrases. Kanji are the really complex-looking characters that can be used to express whole words. When spoken, one uses a mixture of all three. When reading a Japanese newspaper, you will see all three, but you generally need to know about 10,000 kanji to understand a newspaper.

Here's some additional information: Kanji is a series of ideographs. They are, essentially, characters that express meaning (nouns, verbs, that sort of thing).
Hiragana and katakana indicate sounds, not meaning. They are used to spell out foreign words (katakana), or to add suffixes to kanji (hiragana).
