Some do, and some don't. I was married to a vegetarian, and we fed our dog a raw diet. Raw meat mixed with vegetable mulch and some supplements. Raw chicken necks and backs as well (yes, they can handle the bones--cooked bones are dangerous for dogs, because the cooking process makes them brittle; raw bones are easily chewed and digested).

I have known vegans who insist on feeding their dogs a vegan diet. Dogs can live on this sort of diet, believe it or not. Cats CAN NOT live on a vegan diet. Cats require a particular protein, only found in meat.

Several dog food brands make a good vegan diet for dogs. The oldest recorded dog now living is a 27 year old collie..who has eaten only vegan all or her life.
27-year-old vegan collie could be world's oldest living dog

A border collie said to be 27 could make it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest living dog.

Bramble's owner Anne Heritage says she's still alert and active and goes for a walk four times a day near her home in Bridgwater, Somerset.

The 43-year-old says she feeds her a vegan diet of rice, lentils and organic vegetables.

Her partner Roy Franklin takes her swimming once a week at a canine hydrotherapy pool.

A Guinness spokesman says the dog could be the oldest living and they are keen to examine any application.

The Daily Mail reports Britain's oldest dog was a pedigree papillon called Fred who died at the of 29 in 2000. The world's longest-lived dog was an Australian cattle dog who lived to be just months older than Fred.

Ms Heritage says Bramble nearly died last year after injuring her back in a fall, but has become better with the help of the swimming sessions.

She said: "She loves exercise and has a real passion for being outdoors. She can be a thorn in my side when she's restless, but it's what keeps her going.

Ooooops! Guinness record book recently had to scratch off the books a 27-year-old border collie from England. The owners claim to have fed it lentils all its life. She died.

I'm a vegetarian and I look at it this way. Human being are omnivorous. Canines are omnivorous, but their body's are just not built to process copious quantities of veggies with out some serious protien too. On the bright side, my two beautiful pit bulls love almost any veggie I put in front of them, and their favorite past time is picking raspberries off the vine! Just remember though that if cats and dogs don't get enough animal protein in their diet, they will develop serious health problems including but not limited to blindness and death.
I feed my pets a mixed diet of table scraps (veggies) Raw Advantage, and Nutro Ultra for dogs or Max for cats.

Fruits and veggies are good for dogs though, so don't worry about feeding them anything but grapes and raisins (see the link below) and look at meeting their protein needs as an obligation to their good health!
In response to the idea that dogs on a completely vegetarian diet can have great health, pelase look at the last link.

I do believe that dogs are meant to eat meat- but I still wouldn't want to support the product. Because I live in a family of meat-eaters, my dog does eat typical meat-filled dog food... but if I had a dog of my own I would feed it vegan dog food (which somehow gives them the proper nutrition they need to survive even being a natural carnivore)

The hardcore ones don't. Dogs (and kids for that matter) do NOT do well on a vegetarian diet.

Stupid lunatics.
