I will be moving away to go to college soon, at which time, I will be living in my own apartment, but I really need some things that I can't afford right now. My birthday is coming up too, so it seems really convenient to have someone throw a farewell/housewarming.birthday party/college shower... I'm sure that someone would be willing to do that for me, but I don't really know how to politely drop hints. It seems that it would be really impolite to just bluntly beg for one. How can I encourage this kind of event?

You can't really ask for a shower, but you can talk to your parents and tell them you need some help setting up on your own. Ask if they can ask around in your extended family for hand-me-downs, like old lamps, dishes, furniture, etc that aren't needed any more. I have a huge extended family, so we do this all the time. Whenever another teen goes off to college, e-mails will go out (usually from my Mom, who kind of organizes the whole family tree) asking for old dishes, towels, cleaning supplies, etc.

Another thing you can do is start going to yard sales. People use garage and yard sales to get rid of all kinds of stuff, and some of it is very useful for setting up a first apartment.

Good luck! What an exciting time for you!!

Might not encourage such a thing, but could procure the same results. Ask for target and/or walmart gift cards ONLY for your birthday. Enough gift cards and you should be able to buy whatever you need for the apartment. Trust me, there is not much that can go wrong in a college kid's life that cant be made atleast a little better with a trip to wal-mart.

You can't. And it would be profoundly impolite. There is always the uncomfortable possibility that they may just be glad to see you go so they no longer need to feel coerced. There is time to get some of the things you need. Offer to do chores for relatives, neighbors, and acquaintances or contact a temp agency and earn some money for the things you need. Good luck.

Talk with your parents about planning it for you so to speak. I'm sure they would be ecstatic if they didn't have to spend a lot of money on the stuff you will need for your new apt.

Some everyday inexpensive things you should put on your registry list.......
--everyday plate set (setting for 8 is good)
--towels
--everyday glass/cup set (setting for 8)
--silver wear
--sheets/comforter
--shower curtin w/ hooks
--bath room rug
--pillows
--pots/pans
--XBox 360 w/ PS3 (jk..but they are essential)

Target is usually a good place to get all this stuff at and your friends/family wouldn't have to give an arm and leg...you're not getting married just going to college! LOL.

you would be doing multiple examining and various examining (extra effective than you would be able to additionally think of), so that's substantial to funds it sluggish. set up a recurring for your self so as which you will get all of it completed and nonetheless have time to socialise. Many professors have lecture form training, extraordinarily the massive Freshman training, wherein they'll merely communicate for 2 hours as we communicate. (I went to a large college, even with the undeniable fact that it won't be authentic in a small college). subsequently, you prefer to benefit to take good notes or maybe tape record the lectures. in the process the week after the class, overview your notes. college is a superb experience which will exchange you perpetually. good success!

You don't - that would be really obnoxious! You can ask family and friends if they have any kitchen items or furniture that they are not using, though. Go thrift shopping!
