Yes. After a series of collection efforts, they can.. depending on the dollar amount, go to the courts to either, garnish your wages, or put a lien against your house, or put a levy on your bank accounts. But, you have to owe them quite a bit, because 9 times out of 10, it will cost them more than what it is worth to collect it.

Just an FYI, if you have a bunch of small bills, you can always get $200 or so and call one of the collection agencies up and say, "Hey, I know I owe you $400, but I have $200 cash today. That is all I can pay. Will you settle with me and make my accout paid?" Most will settle with you. You will have to haggle. They will ask for payments, tell them no. This is all I have. I would say your better option is to try to settle with them all one by one... instead of chancing luck of your money being swooped out of your account or paycheck when you need it most. Good Luck

It totally depends on your state exemption statutes.

As for the car, if you still have the car but defaulted on the loan for it, yes they can repo it. But, if the defaulted car has already been repo'd, again what they can do is only what your state allows.

Check out the forums in site I've linked. You will be able to find links to your states statutes.
