Tip toe very gently around this person. They are an obvious time bomb. Don't talk about the problem at hand just make some light chit chat and wait for the person to calm down then maybe leave some literature on cutting around so they find out themselves that there is help for them. Be careful on how you approach this situation It only takes one little comment to set people with this problem off. It is a mental problem so be as understanding and patient as you can.. Good luck I hope everything works out for you all.

This is difficult.....does she have family that you can talk to? If she does, then maybe they should do an intervention. Each person that I've known who has cut themselves has a different reason for it, so knowing the reason would be a good start. Is she looking for attention? Does she like how it feels? Does it make her actually "feel"? How old is she? There aren't too many details so it's hard to say, but I would try to talk to a family member if possible. Your friendship might be strained for awhile, but her life may be in jeopardy.

My cousin had a friend who confided to her about her cutting problem so she [my cousin] went to her school's counselor ASAP and tipped them off. Her friend spoke to the counselor, her parents and ended up seeing a therapist and is doing really well now. Don't just ignore it or listen to them if they say they don't want help, because in the end, they really appreciate it. Although it may sometimes take time, so don't expect a big thanks right off the bat..

But most importantly,

GET HELP as soon as possible

and 'monitor' them to make sure they don't try to do anything drastic..Remind them how important they are and how they mean a lot to everyone and how their cutting hurts not only themselves, but their friends/family/loved ones.

Your friend has an addictive behaviour. She cuts herself to give herself a feeling of power over her fate, & she is addicted to the temporary relief that cutting gives her. I have learned from personal experience that you can't tell an addict who is deep into their addiction what to do. She needs professional help (you know that already). You are never going to be able to handle your friend. If you can't stand to be around your friend when she cuts herself, then tell her that you can't be around her anymore unless & until she agrees to get treatment for her addiction. It may be a strong enough consequence for her to seek out help. Ever watch the show called "Intervention" on A&E? It has a lot of usefull information that would apply to your situation. Wish you luck.

With caution so that they do no more damage to themselves or you and your friend.
Go to their parents, if you guys are young.
Call in their siblings, if they get a long with them and they are old enough.
You probably need an intervention.
There are help lines....
Try the Suicide Prevention Hotline... or your County of Mental Health.. which are listed in the phone book.

If their is anyone your friend will listen to utilize that relationship to get help for your friend. i don't claim to know all the reasons for this behavior. I do know that quite often it is done to change the way they hurt. The pain that is felt is so overpowering that she just wants to change the way they feel or hurt. Your friend is severely troubled. I f you must call 911. This untreated will most likely get worse.

u've tried to talk to her? find out exactly what's wrong? try to figure it out even if she doesn't want to talk. if she really doesn't want help from u, u need to possibly sacrafice ur friendship for a short time and get her some help. u seem to realize how serious cutting is so i'll trust u'll do whatever it takes to help her. ur a good friend just keep it up. u and ur friend just need to not give up on her. just try not to be too obnoxious. :)

Cutting is a self-destructive behavior that almost always leads to suicide. Report it the authorities in your area (police, health department, physician, etc.).
