Anytime I took the Amtrak to NY, I had to show it in Philly to board the train, and once onboard, they usually just wanted my boarding pass. The conductors are so busy I dont think they care. During Christmas of 2005, my hubby bought my best friend and I a ticket to NY, and both of our names were severely misspelled. No one cared! I wish the security was a little tighter.

I have gone on long trips on Amtrak, but they were all in the pre-9/11 world, so I don't know if you have to show ID or not. My guess would be that you do, since you are relatively close to a fairly open border (Canada), and since security restrictions have tightened considerably not just for air travel, but for all other means, as well.
Just put your ID in your pocket so you have it handy if you are asked to show it, and problem solved!

Oh yeah! They do it randomly, but it's like every 3 or something people and they almost always pick me for some reason. Yes, you have to show picture ID generally... you could probably get away with it if you really don't have any form of ID, I suppose.

Always have your ID. They may ask for it with your ticket at the station. I found that the bartender in the bar car asks for it most often, even if you look really old.
