You have to be fired or get laid off from a job. Go to you states employment web site and file a unemployment form and they will tell you how much each week you will get. Remember you still have to pay taxes on it.

Ive had to do it before. But found job next day so I never collected on it.

You only get unemployment if you have paid into it. yes you have to have a job, then if you get laid off you can collect unemployment.
