On the side facing up. Unless you're making grilled cheese sandwiches, then on the outside, but only a little.
But dinner-rolls, you prise them open with a fork, and put in a pat of butter, let them sit closed while you eat most of the dinner, then the butter will ooze around and be a delight when you get to them.

drop a piece of bread on the floor. butter the side that lands face-up.

That is like asking which end should you stick it after it's buttered. On the top end i would butter the outside(top) if you intend to stick it up the other end you better butter both sides:):)

Ok this is what you have to do...Stand on your table and close your eyes and throw the bread on the ground and which ever side lands up, you butter! :)

Either side will do...course the very first and last slice should be buttered on the side lacking the crust.
