I like your question. However, I have to answer NO to it. Most shallow people are often not "deep" nor half the time do they even have the mentality to be "deep".. Most shallow people are often uneducated, materialistic, stereotypical types who get a "sense of satisfaction" by saying what they say or by doing what they do. When people are "trying" to be deep, chances are they are on some kind of journey in life trying to get to know themselves a little better by exploring somthing that piques their interest.

How do you know when someone is "trying" to be "deep" rather than being "really deep." I don't think there is any relationship between thinking through issues rigorously and in a disciplined and intelligent way (which is what I -assume- you mean by "deep") has anything to do with being shallow. Village idiots can be shallow, too..

Yes. I really enjoy the Beat culture for that reason. They can be so lame, but I can really dig them anyway!!

The shallowness probably comes from a dogma that doesn't inspire creativity, personal commitment, personal insight, etc. When people are just regurgitating stuff they've heard, it gets pretty shallow pretty quick.

It's an ego-mind exercise: let me tell you something "profound" that you will respect/like/listen to me. Doesn't work, but hey...

Cheers

If you are trying to be deep then at least you are on the right track. What I really despise is when famous people are asked for their opinions on important issues instead of asking highly educated PhDs, in specific fields.

soulsista,
I think I know what you mean.

I think that the key word in your question is 'trying.'

Those that do that, I believe, are operating upon a shallow knowledge base.

Hopefully, they are aware of the struggle that occurs in their responses, the unsurity and inability to come up with an effective approach.

I just think being deep is what is saying how you really feel and sometimes how you really feel can be very shallow

No, but you obviously do. What does it matter anyway? People enjoy who they enjoy. Don't you have anything better to do? Obviously you consider yourself to be one of the deep people.
