It depends. I am a private contractor and so people give me X-Mas bonuses. and pay me extra when I work longer or do extra stuff that they have asked me to do.
Otherwise whether they work for themselves or a company it is not expected for you to tip them.

RE:
Do you tip when having your house cleaned by a service?
The first cleaning is rather expensive and the bi-weekly is up there too. Do you tip the workers (2-3 people) and if so how much?

Well, is it through a cleaning service or do they work for themselves? If it's through a cleaning company, you can tip either 10% of the total monthly bill or you wait until Christmas and give a "Christmas bonus" of $20 or more per person. It's just an extra "thank you" but not there's no obligation to tip.

I remember someone telling me that "tip" actually stands for (or used to stand for) "To Insure Promptness" and given at the beginning your time in a restaurant to make sure you received special or better than average treatment. We don't really use tips this way but in that light, if the staff that clean your home are hourly and stay the full time, take very good care of your home and do what you think is better than average work give them a bonus or tip. I doubt they expect it and it would probably get you a bit better service. If you don't give a tip or bonus I doubt you would get any worse cleaning service than anyone else.

I've never heard of tipping for that particular service, and I have 2 friends who clean houses for a living. They just charge by the hour or job.

"Tips" are generally to show you appreciate the service... unless it is a customary (read "expectation") for the service like with delivery people, waitresses, taxi cab drivers, hair dressers who generally expect tips (unless the person is the owner). Their compensation is set up to get tips in their bottom line. Folks whose regular job is a set amount (like per hour) like doormen, yard and cleaning people, postal workers, or whatever (where you see them -perhaps- more often), tips are reserved for special occasions like end of year or if they go 'beyond' the normal description by a lot. Their compensation is generally set to not be dependent on tips ... not that anyone would refuse (or could not use) more money!
