Ancef is the brand name for Cefazolin, which is a Cephalosporin antibiotic. Like its close cousins the penicillins, these are beta- lactam molecules that work by inhibiting the synthesis of peptidoglycan, a necessary protein web on the outer surfaces of bacteria. When peptidoglycan does not form properly, the suseptable bacteria literally burst or explode, rendering them killed. Thus Ancef is "bacteriocidal" meaning it kills bacteria.
