My 2 1/2 year old daughter had to be sedated on Monday morning to have some dental work done. On Tuesday she seemed to be feeling fine. Tuesday night however, she started vomiting. She vomited off and on from appx 9pm-2am. This morning she started throwing up again and was also running a fever. I took her to the dentist to check for an infection but was told she is healing fine.

My normally very active 2 year old is now laying around complaining that her stomach hurts. She has not vomited since this morning but still runs a fever when the Tylenol runs out.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I am worried that something is being missed by the dentist and her doctor. (I called her doctor and was told she may have the flu) I just feel uneasy about the whole thing.

Thanks in advance for your advice!!

Each time I have had to be sedated, I am always nausiated for about 20 hours as I 'come out of it'. This includes total sedation, and also partial (such as my epidural for my childbirth). I just puke and puke and feel totally miserable. But it never lasts longer than a day.

Some poeple just react like that when coming out of sedation.

Now, the fact that it is Wednesday, and your Daughter was worked on, on Monday.....is still ill, AND has a fever. That would worry me as well.

If your Mommy-instincts are nagging at you, take her in to see the doctor (not just a phone call diagnosis). And insist that she be thoroughly examined.

Good luck. Having a sick little one is really rough, on both the child AND the Mommy.

Anything in her body due to sedation should have been processed and out of her bloodstream completely within 24 hours... that's what I was told when my daughter had her tonsils out. So if she was fine on Tuesday, her fever and vomiting should be completely unrelated to the sedation. Your doctor's diagnosis of stomach flu is likely right-on.

I totally understand the uneasiness, though... especially with the timing... but hey, you're a mom; it's your job to worry! :-) So keep an eye on her and call a doctor again if the fever doesn't go away by Friday. They will just tell you to keep giving her Tylenol every 4 hours, or if the fever is high, Tylenol and Motrin, alternating every 3 hours, unless the fever doesn't break for at least three consecutive days. Give her lots of lukewarm baths (my little 2 1/2 year old LOVES the bath, so that's always easy), popsicles every once in a while, and lots of love, which you obviously are doing.

So good luck, and I pray your little one gets well soon!

I think that your daughter may have picked up a virus while at the dentist's office or some place else you may have been with her. Unless she has had a reaction to the sedation?Stomach pains, vomiting?Like her body may be trying to get rid of the medicine given? What type of sedation did she have? Has she ever had anything like this before? How is her activity level? It sounds to me, as long as you are giving her Pedialyte, juice, etc, and keeping her with juice pops and other favorites, she'll be fine. I seriously doubt that she has the flu though as hello? This is not flu season...........doesn't begin until the earliest November. So if the fever continues past 101.6 for more than 3 days straight(for the fever, giving a lukewarm bath for at least 15 mins. to 30 mins is always helpful), with little relief, or the vomiting comes back or the stomach pains don't go away, would recommend you go to a pediatrician who can evaluate her. In the meantime, I think she'll be fine but I always say, better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your kids. Usually waiting 3 days, things either get better or get worse, so good luck! I remember that feeling all too well looking over and seeing your little one sick, lying around, and all of it. Will keep her and all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

take your kid to your nearest emergency and get her looked at as soon as possible...

if your daughter is normally very active and it now in extreem pain then take her to get looked at by a different doctor. it could be serious given that she is cramping which is very unusual for a two year old. it may have nothing to do with the sedation...

take her...if you feel uneasy as her mom then do what you need to take care of your baby...no one with think any less of you for being concerned for your daughter health...

if she has been throwing up for so long then she is probably very dehydrated so try and give her just some water as this may be the cause of the cramping....

and its always better to be safe than sorry!

You took her to the dentist? Why? You should have taken her to the pediatrician. Sounds to me as if she is allergic to the medication she was given at the dentists office. Take her to the doctor.

use your mom's instinct. if you feel uneasy, take her to the doctor/emergency/urgent care center. to hell with what everyone tells you. if you feel something is wrong, act upon it. god gave you those instincts for a reason. sometimes it is best to listen to them. what the heck, if nothing is wrong (and it probably isn't) it wont matter. all that matters is the well being of your little one. i have 3 sons and know exactly how you feel!
