In Ham radio, over the years, we have used many different types of modulation (the thing that puts information on the carrier). The first was known as CW or continuous wave (code) by breaking the carrier up in to pieces (dots and dashes). Then we went to putting voice on the carrier by (over time) several ways, AM,FM,SSB, and ISB. Then came RTTY or teletype. Once the computer found it's way in to the Ham shack, we went to high speed computer controlled modulation. The first was ASKIE and then, for even faster baud rates, Packet. Simply put, it is a method of modulation that sends computer coded "packets" of information at very high speeds and the receiving stations computer decodes it back to analog voice or what ever the information was originally.

We, the ham radio operators, can use packet radio. Packet radio is similar to internet chat. We put a modem between the ham radio and the computer and we can communicate each other sending and receiving the signal by the radio.
