In the fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty, a princess pricks her finger with the needle of a spinning wheel and falls asleep for one hundred years. Recently, Taryn Sardis, a seventeen-year-old high school student, experienced a similar experience in 1997. She fell asleep for ten days, and it was impossible to awaken her. No spinning wheel was involved, however. The culprit, in Taryn's case, was a rare disorder called Kleine-Levin syndrome.
Kleine-Levin Syndrome is a rare disorder that causes excessive sleep or hypersomolance.

It also causes compulsive eating, and an abnormal sex drive. It seems to be most prevalent among teenagers. However, once someone contracts the disorder, it doesn't necessarily end with the end of the teens. The malady may occur off and on throughout adult life.
An article from the University of Amsterdam, in Holland, reports that two boys, just entering their teens, became victims of Kleine-Levin after an attack of a viral illness. Because the syndrome is rare, and very few cases have been studied, the cause isn't known. It has responded favorably to treatment with various amphetamines and other drugs.

Cindy and Dick Maier have a very personal relationship with Kleine-Levin syndrome. Their son, Stephen is a victim. The Maiers talk about how difficult it was to get the correct diagnosis. They have included a couple of questionnaires in an attempt to gather information about the syndrome. If you think you or someone you know may suffer from this unusual illness, please read the information the Maiers have gathered.

The Kleine-Levin sleep phase has been likened to the cataplexy associated with narcolepsy. Kleine-Levin may also be related in some way to Prader-Willi Syndrome which, in turn, is sometimes associated with autism.

But, the truth is that very little is known about Kleine-Levin Syndrome except that it does exist, and occasionally turns young people into sleeping princes and princesses.
