Yes, you do need a special pouch or bag for your toilteries. Remember to take things like sunblock, mosquito repellant, and your medicines with you, depending on where you are going and for how long. Also carry extra contact lenses or glasses. If you will be walking a lot around the place, I suggest comfy shoes, preferably sneakers.

Well, people do. If you are flying, your luggage is stored in a separate compartment, and does not get treated like a human being. So if you're happy to have your aftershave or special lotion or sunscreen broken & splattered over your good suit, OK, you don't need a special waterproof bag in an airless compartment.
You don't need to buy a special bag, BTW, just a plastic bag you can tie a knot in.
Anything you don't want to lose, keep in your hand-luggage. Whatever you need for the next three days; medication, shaver, respectable suit, clean shirt; take on board.
If you are going to another climate - maybe ask your colleagues who have been there, what to wear, eat, buy?
And if they would like any product brought back as a gift?
In Ireland, we walk around in summer, in t-shirts, complaining of the heat; while Spanish & Italian kids stroll past shivering, with designer jerseys on & long trousers! No point in toughing it out; if you live in shorts & short-sleeved tops, you will look daft & be cold if you have only brought those!
If any of you need medication, bring a prescription - you might be delayed on your return. Bring books - travelling is boring & you wait around a lot. Bring a recording of lively music - you might as well!
If you are going to a country where they don't speak your language, bring a short list of how to pronounce Hello, Sorry, Goodbye, Thank you, My name is, This is my wife/partner/daughter/son, Where is, Airport.
It can't possibly make you look bad. It's a great idea to bring a passport each, which doesn't expire for the next six months; but you knew that, right?

You didn't say how large your family was or their age which would have an influence on what I would answer.
I would not go on a business trip without my personal items: you are there for your livelihood, so why take a chance on not having a product you need handy. I am not sure if you need a "special bag", but I would make sure whatever you took that was liquid was separated so in the event of a spill, it wouldn't ruin what it was next to, or your entire luggage smelling of cologne or covered in toothpaste, etc.
I have found that zip lock bags work great for shampoos, toothpastes, perfumes, etc. And it has saved the entire bag from being ruined.
I would take a portable DVD for your kids so they are entertained while you travel, or game books, and snacks that help if you are flying (gum for the ears), and if you are driving that you don't spend a fortune on the road getting this or that at the gas stations, etc.
Most important, give your wife a day without the kids to enjoy by herself.... mini vacation right? Treat her to the salon or massage.
