Well, the bible was originally written in Hebrew. How many Christians on here can faithfully translate Hebrew to modern English? Well then, that's why it was subsequently translated into Latin.
Hmmm... how's your Latin? A bit rusty, you say?
King James had the Latin version translated into (old) English after the Black Plague killed half the people in Europe - including most of the priests. He needed a version that "commoners" could read because most of the scholars perished while tending to plague victims.
Which means... the King James version of the bible was translated from Hebrew to Latin, then from Latin to old English by a bunch of scribes who were at best Friars, perhaps theologians, and very likely NOT linguists.
So now you tell me whose word is in that book.

You seem like you're a Christian person... please don't take any offense to what I say.
When you say you've heard people back up their views about racism using the Bible, what part of the Bible do they use? If you know the Bible well, you could easily catch them on a verse they either accidentally made up, or took out of context.
About the thing with gays, the Bible is clear about it: homosexuality is against the nature for which humans were created. So if you're complaining about people using the Bible against homosexuality, then you might as well be discontent with people using the Bible against murder.
And the Bible is NOT outdated... the Bible is a work that is timeless... it's teachings apply to humans, not to time periods or civilizations restrained by time.
And I really get what you're saying about the Bible being written by a bunch of men... I mean, that's SOOO wrong: while we're at it, the Constitution (also written by all men) should be thrown out, too.... hehe you see where I'm going with this? It doesn' matter if it was written by men.
And Christianity teaches that the Bible was written by 46 men, but by one Author--that is, the Holy Spirit. So, the men that physically wrote the Bible's books are merely a tool--a means by which GOD authored the Bible. In that sense, it would be the same as complaining about the pen used to write the Constitution... it's irrelevant.
I don't know if the 10 commandments thing was a joke, but if it wasn't, the reason for reading the Bible is pretty simple: read it if you want eternal life. You don't have to be commanded to do want something...
Christianity teaches that GOD the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are one... so how would Jesus disagree with what the Holy Spirit wrote? Doesn't work....
And about GOD not wanting us to read the Bible... why would He write it then? He doesn't do things without reason.
I hope this helps. Take care.

I half agree with what you're saying.. Yes, Christians tend to twist the bible toward their own gain, and even in the bibile, when poeple did that, Jesus would rebuke them, or God wold curse them or something. It's meant to be a book of love, but many Chritians nowadays have trouble floolwing that part of it.
However, there are parts in the bibile where it says "follow it verbatim" (deuteronomy) it's not archaic, it's very relevent to today's problems. providing, however, that one does not manipulate the word, as i had mentioned before, to back up their hatred. There is no verse about hatred towards women, gays, or sinners. rather, the bibile urges love towards all people.
Do your own research, and don't rely on other poeple's interpretations of the bible. That's how cults get started, and thats how hatred spreads.

please quote the Christian who says they hate someone. Christians love all including their enemies. Because we stick to moral ethics makes us bad? The bible is today and until the world ends. Maybe you should research how the bible came to be and who wrote it so you wont sound so ignorant. It was written by holy people the God put His Spirit in them to inspire them to write it. If God wrote the bible himself, ignorant people would worship it. Plus the glory of the Lord is so powerful that no one could touch the box that the 10 commandments (written by God Himself) held or they died instantly. Only a priest could go in and look at it. The bible was made in the most perfect way and is valid today. We dont go whatever is the popular thing to do for the century. Gay marriage 50 yrs or earlier was disgusting. Now tv makes it cool and makes everyone think its normal because its popular in the secular media shows. perhaps in 50 yrs it will be cool to have sex with kids or goats. In 50 yrs Christians wont think it is moral and people like you will be whining about how they think the bible is old because it wont allow people like you to have sex with children or goats.

A true Christian will not express hate in any fashion. It is true that you can use just about any verse in the bible to back up anything you wish. 1600 years in the writing, by 40 different men, and they all say the same thing - Jesus. (as long as not taken out of context) we as Christians are not to judge, "let he without sin cast first stone" kind of thing. There are no severe problems in the bible if taken as a whole. feel free to email any further or deeper questions or comments.

With faith in Jesus Christ, I take the bible seriously, the King James Version, the origninally written WORD OF GOD. Let's not forget that, or take God's word out of context. The fact is, God gives us the path of righteousness, and the bible teaches it throughout, in the Commandments, Old and New Testament. The only reason why people think it is outdated is because they want justification for their sinful way of life, and so feel it easier to make "new" churches, or "new" bible versions. God's plan or purpose for our life can be fulfilled if we follow in the path of righteouness....... which means we need to live up to His standard, not OUR own self-standard. Either we get right with God, or we don't. It is your own free will to choose what path you want to take. I can tell you, if Jesus abides in you, then you will have peace about your questions, because you will then take the bible seriously. He is YOUR creator!!!!!!!!

People use the Bible to back their views in favor of homosexuality, smoking weed, nudist colonys, and other religions as well.
Jesus quoted the Old Testament many times to support his own authority. He did view it as authoritative. "Not one jot or tittle...."
The Bible supports the idea that the oppression of men by women is wrong, which is why the Fall of Humanity in Genesis 3 is followed by the oppression of men over women.
The New Covenant slowly attempts to restore the proper order and so in Gal 3 we read that there neither Jew or Greek (race), slave or free (economic hierarchy) male or female (gender) for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
The Old Covenant also had laws protecting women from abuse (Exodus 21 and 22)

the problem with the most is the Old Testament.
if you follow that it is not of Jesus but before his time.
there was more don't do this and that in it.
The NEW TESTAMENT is supposed to offer hope and grace and forgiveness.
the views in it are of a moral standard not a physical one.
if you follow what it says are the do's in life then there is no time for the dont's.
and no god would not want us to be hatefull nor spitefull or raceists or any of the others.

No actually i find that the Bible has been very reliable. Every promise I have acted upon has resulted in great blessings in my life.
From the Word of God I get light for my path... Through it I understand more than the ancients , I gain great insight and undersatnding.
It has been a great source of joy and comfort.
How can I curse th very thing that gives me eternal life?

You are right. Good points. Most of the relgious texts are like that. Written by men a long time ago which is not really conducive to today's society. Those are tools to control people.

I completely agree. I was a member of an evangelical Christian church for a couple of years. I kept pushing down all of the thoughts that crept up, questioning the validity of most of their beliefs until I finally had enough and left the church. They were happy to see me go. They didn't like all those questions.
