What is the best type of meditation to practice for stress relief? Can you feel a difference immediately or does it take time? Any suggestions on books to help me get started will be appreciated

If you do meditation correctly you will feel a difference right away. It will however take time for you to get experienced enough to be able to overcome stressful situations with ease.
Mediation is a matter of mind over matter. You have to train your mind.
This is a great website for beginners.

I started doing it to help me sleep.

I like guided meditations on CD. Doreen Blumenfeld's Journey into Healing Light is a good starter.

There are tons of stress relief and relaxation meditation CDs on iTunes, too. Just search in New Age.

Be careful about stress. It is caused from society. Depression is all about friends and family and maybe the worst thing you can do is meditate on your troubles. If you want a mantra to chant to stop thinking any type will do. Your best bet is to find a new friend and get a fresh start.

No meditation is not realy spiritual. It is more like just relaxing and taking off stress. No you can not feel it immediatly it takes time about 15 mins. a day. You will fill calm and relaxed after a week you will see progress most likely.

Nope. You can do it strictly for your health. Its different for everyone, but I think most people notice a difference once they start doing it consistantly. I never read any books. Just clear your mind for as long as you can. The amount of time you can keep your mind clear will increase with practice.
