Or do I need to buy the stuff online for ten times the cost? And if I can, what kind of brush (material) should I get?

It will run all over. I would recommend a sauce that is more firm and "paintier", like Nutella. Regular chocolate melts at a temperature that's below normal body temperature, maybe that would work. You could use just about any kind of brush, but I think a synthetic bristle brush would be easier to clean. Instead of chocolate, I've used key lime pies from a bakery outlet store. They are inexpensive and fun!

Just squirt a few tablespoons and stir to taste. It's funny you should ask this as my daughters just mixed some about an hour ago. You're not buying the syrup by the spoonful but by the bottle so just use a little at a time until you decide how sweet you want it. Light brown if not too sweet and looking like chocolate milk if you want it sweeter-it's not rocket science-my kids all made it themselves when they were about four years old.
