It really does sound like the kitten needs medical care - you'd feel awful if this got really bad and caused blindness or death. Call your local humane society or ASPCA out of the phone book, or any cat rescue agency. They may be able to refer you to a sympathetic vet who might be willing to treat for free/reduced fees.
It's wonderful that you took in strays, but if you can't afford to get them medical care, maybe it's best if you turn them over to a no-kill shelter or other rescue agency? They'll make sure the kittens are given the proper treatment and shots.

We just got a 9-week old kitten with a similar problem, except his eyes remained shut. We took him to a vet and it ended up that another kitten scratched his eye (she thinks they might have been fighting for food). He's getting a lot better now since she prescribed some eyedrops, but definitely take your kitten to a vet; it could be the same thing that happened.

You are doing the right thing !! Keep a warm cloth on the eye until he/she gets anxious and wants you to stop. My kitten had the same problem ... thats all i did and it got better within a few days. Do not rub her eye. Just keep it lightly pressed on the eye. If it keeps up and doesnt get better you're going to have to take her to the vet :( good luck!

I've had the same problem with my kittens.I used to work for a veterinarian and he suggested mixing a pinch of salt with warm water, then gently rubbing the eye with the saline solution,Sounds like it would hurt,it does'nt.After doing this several times a day it should start clearing up after a few days.Good luck.

Stray kittens often have eye infections. Keeping the eye clean (carefully) with something like sterile eye wash or artificial tears helps a lot, but you usually need medication to get rid of the infection itself. Only Terramycin is available without prescription (and not in California).

Sounds like Conjunctivitis....
Most of the causes are infectious. While many different kinds of infectious organisms can cause conjunctivitis, there are only three that are common culprits: Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), Feline Chlamydia, and Feline Mycoplasma. It is important to know that a case of conjunctivitis can have one, two, or all three organisms together causing the problem, and that Feline Herpesvirus cannot be transmitted to people -- only to cats. It is a very species-specific virus.
So, you need to buy something like this:

Go to this link, and any one of those 2 Ophthalmic Ointment's will work.
