why are the different dialects in language like english spanish french & portuguese?

I would like to know why are the differents dialects how did this happen, if a group of people came from one place why doesnt the language stay the same, I learned spanish in spain I went to south america couldnt understand a word they said why

One way that dialects come about is by geographical isolation. As a rule, all languages change... it can't be stopped! So, if there are two groups of people who both speak a language (say, English), but they are separated by a huge body of water and never interact, the changes that occur in the languages will be completely different. New words will enter the vocabularies, different vowel pronunciations will occur, and all the while these two groups will not be influencing each other. The changes creep in slowly over time until the point comes when they have diverged drastically enough that sometimes they won't even be able to understand each other. Mostly, native speakers of the same language will still be able to understand different dialects of that language, but it just takes a little extra effort. You couldn't understand the Spanish (I'm presuming it isn't your firsts language) because you just don't have the intuitions and experience of a native speaker to be able to handle a different dialect.

The dialects stay in a localised region because only people from that region hear the different pronunciation often enough to have it integrated into their own style of speech. I`m portuguese and let me tell you that, sometimes, we have a hard time understanding eachother.
It has to do not only with the accent but with the fact that, in my country, you have different words for the same thing in different parts of the country.
For example, in the North if you want a cup of coffee you ask for a "cafe" but in the South you ask for a "bica".

becoz south american spanish is different from the spanish spoken in spain..there r many accents.. but its easy if u know someone from south america they'll help u & tell u the difference..

My sister learned spanish 2 so she couldnt understand south americans but she met people from south america n asked them . they r very kind & helpful.. :)

try to look 4 friends from there (by chating).. its helpful.
