I got chosen for a survey to try some eye drops. When I opened it, it smelled like Vicks vapor rub. Some of the ingredients were: boric acid, chorine, and menthol. They are wanting to pay me to do the survey...I say my eyes are worth more...what do any eye doctors say about putting these ingredients in my eye? Are they harmful to the eye?

Ummm, try putting BenGay on an open cut and tell me how that feels...that's what you'll feel if you use mentholated drops in your eyes.

I work for an ophthalmologist and right now we are doing about 15 studies for various eye drops and lens implants. None of the drops smell like menthol.

I assume these ingredients are used in minute amounts - boric acid is sometimes used to help with the ph of the drug - I believe. As for chorine (chlorine?) I found no info. It does appear that other countries actually have "menthol" drops (Japan) to "wake them up" and it supposedly burns pretty badly.

Whether or not you should use them...that's a good question.
What are the drops supposed to be for?

Well, did the survey have you sign a contract? If so, what did it say about what they'll do if something does wrong? If it says nothing about your personal safety should something bad happen, don't do it.

Don't do it! Don't be their guinea pig.
