It depends on what you are talking about... Condom for your protection or a 357 magnum gun for your personal protection or you could also drive around in a nice looking magnum car. My vote is for the first option.

Magnum? Would that be a magnum firearm or a magnum of champagne?
Cartridge is best answered by the purpose. a .357 wouldn't be recommended for home defense because you'll go through walls. As for the famous .44 Mag revolver, it's more than powerful enough for deer or boar hunting at ranges normally reserved for archery (and you don't have to put your beer down). If you're fishing in Alaska, you'd better bring the 460 or even the S&W .500 Magnum in case you get a bear that's interested in your fish. A previous comment about the .357 having more power than a .44 is just plain ignorant! You wouldn't stop a bear with a .357, no matter how many times you fire but a well placed .44 Mag will drop it cold because it's the mass of the projectile at impact that does the hurts. The best answer I can give is 1: What is the gun used for? 2: Do I want exotic cartridges (.457 Linebaugh) or common ones (.357 or .44 which also fire .38 Special and .44 Special respectively for a light practice load)? 3: Is this for hunting? 4: Hunting what? 5: Home defense? 6: Police or defensive agent duty? 7: Revolver (any of the common ones)? 8: Semiautomatic (.44 Automag, 38 Super which is like a 9mm Mag of sorts)?

Answer like this:
1: Purpose
2: The most caliber I can handle and reaquire target for 3 shots in 3 seconds in a 3 inch circle at 25 yards
3: Cost of ammunition or equipment for reloading

Go to a gun store that has an indoor shooting range and pay rent for the guns you want to try and purchase ammo for them. Then decide what you NEED versus what you WANT.

Personally, I use a S&W 629 in .44 mag for boar and deer (mostly boar) .44 special in the same gun allows me to practice all day and not wear out the gun, and it's fun to hunt rabbits with it too. As for home defense, I shoot a .45 ACP from a Springfield Armory 1911a1 with "Magsafe" loads available through your specialty dealer, designed to penetrate a body, but not exit that body or go through walls if (God forbid) I miss. For duty, it's the .45 ACP again but from a Springfield XD .45 with 5 inch barrel and an impressive 14 round capacity.
So there's four different rounds from two different guns and all of the versatility I need.
Find what all of your needs are and find the one that fills those needs the most

.357 Yeah. it will go through 3/8in of steel plate or 17 inches of pine.
Unlike the 44 witch stops in a 1/4 inch of steel plate.
The reason is sectional denesity. The 44 is larger in Dia to weight.
So the .357 @.380in dia and 90grains in weight boattail slug is denser than the .44 in at the same weight and flat tailed.
And if you hit a living target with it pieces will come off .
