I also have Chronic Nightmares. HOWEVER - I didn't have any stressful or traumatic events before they started and they have not stopped due to medication or lack of stress or anything I've done. I've seen doctors and have been simply told "we don't know what's wrong with you". Over the counter and prescription drugs do nothing. They do not shut it off and it is not that I don't sleep, but like a few others I've found, I sometimes fear sleeping because they become so vicious. There are no repetative occurances. They started before I turned 14. I am now 23 and they have never stopped. Please, if you have it, give a real thought....not "less stress" or "more alcohol"... be realistic! I'm asking for help!

I thank those that try to help. I thought I should note that I'm Wiccan, so I've tried astral healing. I don't do drugs, smoke, or drink. And the only thing happening when they started was being bored in school, hoping not to move again. So I don't think that. Tried the lucid dreaming. I fail miserably. And sweet people - leave religion out of it. Thanks to those that post offering earnest help, as meager as it may be.

Usually chronic nightmares are caused by something our psyche is trying to tell us. Either something we have stuffed down (denial) that is traumatic or a situation that we are dealing with and can't see the whole picture (or are afraid to see it). Is there a decision you need to make that is very important and you are avoiding it?

Example: A woman begins to have nightmares about a man coming into her room at night while she sleeps. The nightmare gets worse and worse as the man gets closer and closer in each dream. She always wakes screaming. She goes to a counselor and she finds that she's been stuffing the fact that her husband is emotionally abusive and has been cheating on her. He is "killing" her essentially, thus the dream about a man coming to kill her.

If you are female, "bad man" nightmares are something you need to discuss with a good counselor. You didn't tell what the dream was about, that is significant. Write it down in detail. Often, we can "force" a happy ending by solving the problem that causes it to come at night. Take care.

Well, there can be a few reasons for this problem that I can think of. I would suggest the following. Looking for a good hypnotherapist in your area. She/he may be able to reprogram your subconscious mind to be more kind to you as you sleep. Also, a good energy healer with a solid knowledge of the spiritual realms could help. Lastly, you may find it helpful to contact a dream therapist. A person who can decipher and decode dreams. Remember, with all dreams, it is our higher self and our subconscious mind trying to pass on information to us of importance. Your nightmares may not cease until you understand the messages that are trying to get through. To consider my advice takes an open mind. A willingness to consider the possiblity that these things might help. I'm an energy healer of many years. I would not still be in this field if it did not help people. A few more things that could help. Keep kind and loving thoughts, do good deeds here and there, and keep your sleeping area clean and fresh. I wish you all good things.

I have this very same thing. It started for me after I had a serious illness adn never went away until my doctor and I finally found a combination of medication that owrks for me. I take L-tryptophan and Effexor. They have stopped the mightmare completely. Now at least when I go to bed I know I will not have a nightmare.

You're in the wrong venue for serious help. All you're going to get is crap about prayer, less drugs, yada, yada. If you really want help, then go to a psychiatrist. If they can't help, find different psych. I'm sorry to hear you're going through this and don't feel that a psych is only for loon. A lot of us see them to let out what is stressing our insides. Good Luck.

I beat them by learning to fight. when I was having them I could feel nothing but fear so I learned to turn my emmotions on and off I learned to turn fear into anger. it's simple I got angry and beat them down. the trick is too abandon logic it has no place there just will yourself into anger and keep going till you stand on a pile of bodies that once were your enemies. no thought no mercy when you can do this there will be no more fear and no more nightmares it also acts as a great stress relief and recreation. try it tell me how it works for you.

Leave your bible open to the 23rd psalm on your bedside table, and pray to Jesus before you go to sleep out loud.
