According to the 2004 UCR (Uniformed Crime Report) data provided by the FBI, there was 16,137 murders. Prelminary data is available for each city for the year 2005, but no concrete data.

Unfortuately there is no up-to-date information like this. Researchers and law enforcement, as well as the general public have to rely on the UCR data that is analyzed each year and published 2 years after compliation.
