It has been since the 1970's! Unfortunately America is in the stranglehold of the big oil companies that make record profits from the energy crisis.

Al Gore in 2000 suggested just what you are...that there is real opportunity for an innovative approach towards the energy crisis. Developing new non-polluting approaches to the energy needs of the world would create a whole new industry and new opportunities for record profits from cleaning up our huge problem.

Unfortunately nobody in DumbFuckistan (the middle of America) was paying attention and they elected OilCanBush so now we are spending all of our resources on killing people and running up the debt so we can burn even more fossil fuels.

Any societal need presents an opportunity for someone to profit by fulfilling it. American companies, as well as others from around the world, are developing many new ways to produce energy. Investment in "Alternative" energy companies and technologies is at unprecedented levels, not just in America, but around the world. The opportunity will be turned into profit by those who best create and market solutions - just like any other need.

Opportunity to do what??

1) The high price of gas has nothing to do with supply and demand. The price could be contracted between two nations (the US and Saudi Arabia, for example), at $25 / barrel. The high price is because of the "spot market" in London, where people speculate on the price of oil, and artificially drive up the price.

2) It's time to go back to nuclear energy. Especially high-temperature gas-cooled reactors, which are meltdown proof. They're also pretty handy to desalinate sea water.

The apparent crisis is an opertunity. Facts remain that our, and global energy reserves are higher than they have ever been due to improvements in the technology required to locate and retrieve resources. Thats a cold hard fact that a liberal america wants to keep a secret.

Bill Clinton says so in recent speech he made. He mentioned new ethanol and other biofuel industry could help keep more jobs in the country and increase national security. Which is true. Whole new energy industry in the country should boost jobs here since they will be producing energy for our country. You won't see people send corns to India and have them make fuel and bring it back.

We here in Canada have more oil than Saudi Arabia, not to mention half the fresh water in the world. It's only a matter of time before the U.S. decided to "liberate" us.
