Black tie is not 'knee length' - it's a floor length gown. Not quite prom, but formal, formal, formal. I don't think that pants are appropriate for a woman at a black tie event unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Black is acceptable if it's an evening wedding, but white, red, and any other bright colour or colour that is close to white would be frowned upon.

And don't forget that a wrap is a must if the wedding is in a church and if you don't have your shoulders covered. It's a good idea anyway since the weather can cool off at night.

Try to find out what the wedding colours are and avoid them as much as possible. Even similar colours - if the Bridesmaids are wearing navy, a dark plum may blend in too much, etc.

I'll link below to a few examples of a formal evening gown. : )

A black tie is a formal affair men wear tuxes or evening suits to be honest i would rent one take the invitation with you the venue will tell the rental place the correct combo . women are in evening gowns white is a no no and i would ask the colors of the wedding and stay away from those colors as well . But it typically means long or tea length formal evening wear. i would again bring the invitation along when shopping most places that sell formal wear are very familiar with the venues and what is correct attire for the occasion

For men black tie mean a tuxedo. For women you are much more fortunate. Women can wear just about any attractive evening dress, and long as it's not flashy and gaudy.

Black tie indicates tuxedos for men and floor length gowns for women. The gowns should be evening gowns and not ball gowns (big poofy skirts). have fun!

the belief white symbolizes purity or some ingredient comparable is a delusion. Blue is surely the colour of purity. Queen Victoria began the white wedding ceremony ceremony dress trend via way of actuality she had lace she mandatory to have in her wedding ceremony ceremony. As females persons everywhere interior the British Empire (a large chew of the international at that ingredient) paid interest to and copied Queen Victoria, white wedding ceremony ceremony outfits grew to alter into very customary. i assume adult men placed on black via way of actuality optimal adult men's formal outfits are dark colorings.

Women should wear an evening dress/pantsuit that isn't black or white. Men should wear a tuxedo with a (this is almost a duh) black tie. It can either be a necktie or a bow tie, that's personal preference.
