PR is 100 x 35 miles. It is a very small island and everything is relatively close. If you want to stay near the airport (Luis Munoz Marin Intl Airport) your choices are Isla Verde, Condado, and Old San Juan area. Some major attractions are in Old San Juan, which is located about 15 -20 mins away from the airport, because of traffic. Everything in Old San Juan is in walking distance; you will find there museums, forts, rum factorys, great night life, restaurants, a casino, good shopping... There are many great things to see and do that will not be close to you if you stay near the airport, but every hotel provides tour information. Do not worry for not knowing Spanish, in PR (mainly in hotel/tourist area) pretty much everyone speaks English; and if you get out of that area in PR we take an English class since 1st grade all the way through high school - you will be able to communicate. Do not miss: El Yunque Rainforest, Camuy Cave Park, Forts El Morro and San Cristobal, Bacardi Rum Destilery($0.50 ferry ride from Old San Juan pier 1), Culebra (Flamenco - 2nd best beach in US, $2.50 ferry ride from Fajardo to the sister island of Culebra), Bio Bay (Fajardo, La Parguera, Vieques). If you are a surfer go to Rincon, if you just want to hang out in the beach among a younger crowd go to Ocean Park in Isla Verde (next to the Airport), do not miss El San Juan Hotel lobby and disco Brava (hot spot). Also, I recommend that you rent a car, it is very easy to drive there, signs clearly marked and same traffic rules as the US, we drive in the left side of the car too :). Visit www.gotopuertorico.com for more info. Hope you enjoy the trip and my island.

Hey man! If you never been to Puerto Rico...well I suggest always travel with at leastwith a "Buddy"...you have more Fun that way. Island is small but full of adventure.
If you could, while you here book a trip with Carnival Cruise lines and take a week to check out surrounding Islands as well. "San Juan" will always be the Central point...from there you can adventure on to bulk of the island...many resources you'll find as soon as you get here...from the Hotel Lobby, to the cobble stones of the "Viejo San Juan". About Spanish...this isn't Mexico...but it is always good to at least atempt to integrate with native language while you are here...Heck, if you don't know, it won't be held against you!
In some parts of the island, you will see levels of Poverty...but If you did not know...several years back we were chosen the Happiest country...even with our levels of Poverty.
Hah! Carribean Island Life...nothing better than Life here, as a tourist!!!

YOU WILL GET BETTER RESPONSES IF YOU CONTACT THE PUERTO RICO FORUMS AT
WWW.TRIPADVISOR.COM
ALTHOUGH PUERTO RICO IS A RELATIVELY SMALL ISLAND THINGS AND PLACES ARE NOT CLOSE TOGETHER. MOST PEOPLE WHO VISIT THERE USUALLY RENT A CAR AS TOUR/EXCURSIONS OFFERED THRU THE HOTELS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE. ALSO KEEP IN MIND THAT TAKING A TAXI ANYWHERE OUTSIDE THE SAN JUAN IS EXPENSIVE, AND IT IS SOMETIMES IMPOSSIBLE TO ARRANGE RETURN TRIPS. THE COST OF A TAXI ONE WAY SAN JUAN TO FAJARDO (WHERE MOST OF THE SAILING AND SNORKELING TRIPS ARE) IS AROUND $65.00. MOST OF THE REALLY GOOD BEACHES ARE LOCATED ON THE WEST END OF THE ISLAND IN THE RINCON / ISABELA AREA WHICH IS A 2 1/2 DRIVE FROM SAN JUAN. ARE YOU CATCHING ON ? CONTACT TRIPADVISOR AND YOU WILL DEFINITELY GET STEERED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
I HAVE BEEN VACATIONING IN PUERTO RICO FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS !
