I would open a checking account somewhere, and then ask for a CheckCard. I have a Visa CheckCard for my bank, but it looks and acts like a credit card. I don't need to know my bank account info. The card acts for everything. And your question said not designated for teens. You're supposed to be 18 or older, but like my banker said, it usually goes through the cracks, like for me (heh, heh), and with nothing to lose, he signed me up.

Obviously, this is prepaid as it comes out of your checking account funds. So simply put money in there. And get a part-time job and have the money directly deposited into the account. Many banks offer free student checking and there's no fees for using the card as credit, which is the only way you'd want to pay for things anyway. It really doesn't get better than that.

I think with parental permission teens can use any credit cards at all. And I'm pretty sure they are allowed to use the prepaid ones.

American Express. I got one for my daughter and she knows it has to be paid off every month (yes...they have other variations now that you can run just like "regular" credit cards..but stay away from those) so it has to pretty much used as pre-paid lest ye be screwed. Yes..it has the risk of a young girl racking up some bills...but this is also the advantage. Ok..she knows she can't spent without having the green to pay and she hasn't in 3 years. She also knows..that with my permission..if there is a special event...or trip...she has the flexibility..again with my green light to spend a little more.

If you have good credit add your teen to one of your real credit cards as just a cardholder, this will help him/her build credit and they dont even have to know about the card. If you want your teen to have it for spending purposes, have the card issued from your account with a preset spending limit.

If you have bad credit, dont think about what I just said, your teen will inherit your bad credit too.
