the gimp...go to www.download.com and do a search for it. It's a little tricky (for me it was) to install, but it's free and worth it. There's another program that runs it that you have to install with it. The Gimp is not as user friendly as Photoshop, but it has all the same capabilities...just takes a few more steps to get there. But it is free...so I won't complain too much about a few extra steps.

you can crop pictures with ms word, ms paint, acdsee...
but for changing backgrounds i guess you've to try adobe photoshop, or adobe imageready, which are not free, but you can download their free trial version from the internet.
and yes, you can also try download.com, and you'll definitely find something over there.
