I didn't just get back, I got back in 2002. I was a SEAL and was shot in the back in an operation related to the war. I don't feel I deserve any appreciation, I did what had to be done, someone needs to fight. I'm a disabled veteran now, although I now have all physical function and you wouldn't know I was disabled looking at me. People who knew me before have all expressed their appreciation or their admiration of me since I've come back. If it ever does come up in conversation, which is rare because I don't usually talk about it, I do get a lot of appreciation. People say thanks when I tell them. So to answer your question, yes I feel I get appreciation.
In order to respond to some of the other people posting, I dont support Bush, mainly because I've had friends die for his beliefs. I don't support the war either, but someone has to fight, and those who choose to defend our nation deserve a hell of a lot more than a pat on the back, but most don't ask for it and don't want it, many of us would like to forget about it.

I don't think the Public understands. Soldiers are not public property. They don't want people fawning all over them. All the Soldiers I know are modest, pragmatic men who are simply doing their job. When my husband gets home from an Op Tour he wants me, our family and our friends, and he just wants to be as normal as possible and get back to work.

I would rather be treated just like anybody else.
Otherwise people have a habit of treating a veteran according to their political opinions - and not as a person.

my husband just got back from iraq. he hates when people thank him. he gets embarassed. he just likes being in the military and serving our country. im proud of him. he supports bush as do i and 99% of our military friends.
i think that a lot of america is ignorant on what is really going on in iraq. i wish the media portrayed things better.
