your body is 70% water...all your tissues - cells, muscles, bones, skin, organs...all are made up of some degree of water and need water to carry out their functions.
Drinking more water fends off dehydration which can cause a whole slew of symptoms...kidney problems, headaches, dry skin/mouth/eyes/nose, bad circulation....the list goes on. You generally need Eight 8oz classes of water per day.

I've also learned from coolrunning.com that drinking a lot of water can increase your metabolism up to 50%. I believe it! It pretty much stabilizes your body if you drink the right amount, too much is very harmful though, of course. I love water, I run at my optimal w/ it.

Your question is too general. There are many, many reasons. One main reason is to keep your body hydrated. Remember, you are constantly losing water. It is lost from perspiration (At rest, you just don't see the sweat.), from urination, and from defecation. So you have to keep replenishing the lost water.
Water is found in every cell of your body. Without it, you will just be a pile of dried chemicals.

Your body is mainly water. You sweat it out constantly. You use it to make blood and new cells.
You have to replace the water your body uses and what is sweats out.
If you don't like plain water, add a drop of flavor to it.
