Make sure chest buckle is high up on the chest and tight enough so he/ or she can't wiggle their arms out. My daughter does the same thing if I don't make sure it's up high enough and tight enough. Hope that works!

I had the same problem, my 3 year old started out pulling the plastic buckle down and pulling arms out. We tried putting a bolt on each side under the buckle but he just unbolted it, and then learned how to unlatch the buckle. This is at 2 years. We then spent alot of time putting him in time out, stopping the car, not going places all to no avail. Finally, he turned 3 a month ago and my hubby and I decided to get him a booster seat, the graco one that you can remove the back when hes older, and he hasnt even tried to get out of it. I think its because it uses a regular seatbelt, and there isnt a buckle in front of him testing his curiosity. If your child is 30 lbs and 3 yrs old, you might want to get him a new seat. Good Luck and hope you have better patience than I do.

Try to distract him by giving him some games or crayons and paper or whatever you can find on the market for traveling children. However, this is a very serious matter. The minute you notice that your child is out of the straps PULL OVER and put them back on. Remind your child that the car doesn't go ANYWHERE unless he is wearing them. Everytime this happens PULL OVER, and act discouraged that he has done it again, slowing down the ride as every time he does this you have to stop. You might want to even sit awhile in exasperation to let him know that this is NOT OK. If your child continues to do this please take the child imediately HOME. Let them know that when you do this you do not get to go anywhere in the car. When you do finally take your child back to the car for the trip remind him of the CONSEQUENCES before you get in the car and that will make you very sad if you have to come home if he/she cannot follow the rules. After awhile believe me they will stop as the will not like having to come back home and not getting to go to the park or to McDonald's or to that special birthday party. Be firm about this as this could mean your childs life. Also when he does where it tell him what a good job he has done at " following the rules " Good Luck !!!!

My daughter has done the same thing! When she does, I immediately stop the car and replace her straps. I explain that the car seat keeps her safe and point out that I am also strapped in with my seat belt.
I try to make a big deal out of strapping her into her car seat and putting on my seat belt telling her, "Now we're safe." She has actually come to enjoy checking with everyone in the car to make sure they are buckled in before we take off. It has helped.

The best solution is to move into a better car seat. The picture you have is from an Eddie Bauer which frankly is not one of the best choices in terms of car seats.
The best models available are from Britax. Since your kid is already 3 you should consider a convertible seat like the Marathon which is pretty popular and ranks in the top 5. Britax actually ranks in 4 of the 5 top 5 in consumer reports.
You can see great selection at http://www.kidzthings.com/convertible.html with free shipping and models starting at 249.99 and lower.
I hope this helps.

Stop the car when he does it. It may take you an hour to get to the corner store. He will eventually figure out that you mean business. He is testing you and at this point he is winning, getting out of the seat and getting a lot of attention for it. He is old enough to follow through with this request. Reward him for a short trip without unbuckling and gradually make the trips longer and longer.

my son will be 2 1/2 in september and he did the same thing. so since he is 29 pounds we went ahead and took out the five point harness and started using the adult lap/shoulder belt, he does much better this way. carseats that do not have the 5 point harness at all have a weight requirement of 30 -100 lbs. so your son might be ready for the adult lap/shoulder belt.

please don't hit him or slam on the breaks! there are some really good car seats out there for kids these days. they have the 3 way harness that works like a dream and they are difficult for adults to undo so it would be hard for the 3 year old. When I moved my girls into car seats meant for older kids they would sometimes do that. Check around on car seat safety or go to comsumerreports.org.

Put a lock on it!
There are snoopy siblings about and important stuff to be hidden away; kids will love locking up their valuables in this fun, lock-shape safe. They can store their discoveries from walks, a favorite toy, notes from you-know-who or their allowance. Comes with a built-in digital lock that allows them to program in the exact date and time that the safe can be opened. Wonderful fun and easy to use.
