Hate to disillusion you, but catgut comes from...cats, which are not plants. Cat gut. The gut of a cat. Get it? Enjoy your tennis match.

The name is self explanatory, catgut is guts of a cat shaped into a thread in order to be used usually in surgery where they can not get to the stitches to remove, cat gut dissolves.

The earliest reports of surgical suture date back to 3000 BC in ancient Egypt so yes they would have probably been using stitches in 1920 as well. Major developments in 1920's medicine included Insulin and Penicillin so they were a lot more advanced than you think. Fleming's accidental discovery and isolation of penicillin was in September 1928.
