Jesus was speaking to a group of fishermen near the sea of Galilee at the time He said this and He was letting them know that He was calling them to change their life's work from providing physical food to providing spiritual food to people.

Winning souls instead of catching cod(OK there's prob. no cod in the Galilee but it sounded catchy)

It means just what it implies. Any time a Christian answers a question on here, we are fishers of men. We cast the net for God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Don''t try to read anything else into it, because that is exactly what it means. When God or Jesus says man or men they mean women too, and children. The entire human race.

It's an example of when a person fishes for fish, he has a bait and tackle and a line to catch a fish.

The same thing with a "fisher of men"

A preacher has the bait of the Word, the tackle of
holding his interest, and the line of a long line of wonderful promises.

Perhaps that's not the best example but its more or less what it means.

To catch "men" and women, and children too
into God's Net called His Family.

A few of Jesus' disciples were fishermen by trade when Jesus found them!
Instead of catching literal fish, now they would catch men for the kingdom of God! As Christians we are also called to be fishers of men!

the meaning is the phrase has often been the cause of debate. i think its a metaphor with a universal meaning, postulating that instead it is simply a phrase tailored simply to fit people who are fishers - that if Jesus had met a teacher he would have asked them to teach for him, and if he had met a solider he would have asked him to do battle for him.

Some cults out there believe that women in their group should act as prostitutes to bring men into their cult.

But we know that to not be so.

When you are fishing, you throw out your bait and if the fish wants what you are offering, it bites and you reel it in.
So this bible quote means when you hear the words being said you follow the person saying them.

You cast a wide net (by evangelizing) and hope you catch some fish (new believers). It's a metaphor.
