Of course there are plenty of jokes out there, and there have already been several sensible answers, so I'll just add this:
Many cops spend hours in smelly Chevys and Fords riding around town day and night while their families are at home wondering if this will be the day they get the call from the captain or chaplin telling them that mom or dad won't ever be coming home again.
Are there corrupt cops? Sure. Are there bad or lazy cops? Probably. But all of them are out there in harm's way voluntarily. They must remain level-headed when dealing with the scum of the city...not an easy thing to do, just read a few pages of Yahoo Answers and you'll see "calm resolve" is not a common trait.
So if you see a cop at a donut shop, or a coffee shop or even a 7-11 when you're on your way to your safe job or soft bed, instead of snickering like an 8-year old, why not offer to buy his/her cup of coffee? They might accept or might refuse, but it might also make their day a little more bearable to know their work is appreciated.

As a former police officer of 15yrs you hear this all of the time. First off, there are not many businesses open at 3-4 in the morning. Also coffee and sugar help police officers to stay awake due to the caffeine and sugar rush.
Now for a shocking revelation. After leaving police work and going into the private sector working as an engineer and telecommunication tech, I see more donuts every morning than I did as a police officer as the secretaries and execs have meetings.

The association of cops to doughnuts can readily be traced to urban policing in the early 20th century in the United States. Doughnut shops were one of the few places open late or even all night. This afforded police officers a well lit, warm, dry place to finish the nights paperwork and get some coffee to help them stay awake. Doughnot shops have also historically offered sandwiches and other quick inexpensive meals that the officer would actually have time to finish and be able to afford on a limited salary.

This is a funny question. Since I'm sure its not ENTIRELY serious, I'll answer this:
In my home town in Alabama we have a radio show on in the mornings with these 2 guys. Sometimes they play this game called "Cop or No Cop". They literally have a list of like 700 donut shops in AL, and they call one ramdomly. There is a caller, and they have to guess if in the donut shop ther is "Cop or No Cop"! Oh geez it is funny! Oh I am laughin right now!

Because in small towns, donut shops are usually the only thing open at 4:00 in the morning when police are patrolling.

I rather see a cop eating a donut than fighting a teenager high on drugs.

Creme Puff or Bavarian Creme Doughnut? it really is truly the worst question to inquire from me ever because they're 2 of my well known ingredients. I easily %. the bavarian creme doughnut even if. i ought to really say they're my on my proper 3 record of well known ingredients (after pizza and cheesecake hehe) Brown rice or yellow rice? I easily can't even somewhat tell a distinction between them yet I frequently %. brown rice merely because it is going with the vegetables/sauce (like peanut tofu or teriyaki) that I frequently make. even if, if I were eating it easy, i ought to %. yellow rice. Lobster or salmon? properly, i'm vegetarian so i do no longer eat fish and have not for better or less 3 years...I %. neither now yet in case you've requested me 3 years in the past, i ought to have picked lobster actual. It develop into one among my well known food.
