Good question, I think that it is because the understanding of man is not the same as the understand of God. What has meaning and purpose to God, man either doesn't understand or is unwilling to believe. What we don't understand is a mystery to man. So there can be purpose to everything and mystrerious all at the same time.

There is a purpose and a plan for your computer. Does that mean you know exactly how it works? Or is it a mystery to you?

I think that is just how people deal with things when bad things happen. Someone dies young, and the response is always "God works in mysterious ways."

It is mysterious to us because we some times dont know what the purpose is and where it fits into his plans.

Phrases like that just means that they do not really have an answer to the issue. It is a way of saying - I don't know why and God should not have let it happen and I'm just as confused about it as everyone else'

Because people cannot see the 'purpose' in things and do not know why they happen. They refuse to accept that sometimes it takes something negative to happen to get them in the direction they are suppose to be going, or to make them understand something. Sometimes it's like reverse psychology
