The sound is emited but not heard.

Scientists have been dealing with the problem of natural tree falls (and the sound they make--or don't make) for quite some time and have drawn some rather surprising conclusions.

If a tree falls and there is a person around the sound is easily recognized.

If a tree falls in the forest and there is nobody nearby, the sound that it makes is very different and often not recognized as the sound of a tree falling.

Either way, there is a sound.

Even though plants do not show any changes to the naked (or lensed) eye, when a human is in their presence systemic biological changes have been discovered that have grave effects on plant life when a person is within 300 meters. This effect is called "human stress syndrome".

Apparently, when a tree is about to fall, if it senses a human nearby the biological stresses of human presence cause the cell walls in the plant to become brittle and it is the cell brittleness responsible for the familiar sound we know as that of a tree fall. The cell brittleness also has significant effects to the quality of the lumber, making it much more suitable for use in construction (see below).

Through the miracle of recording tape, we are able to provide a sound recording of an actual tree falling without human presence.

Any fall , even water falls have their own falling sound. Tree is living when its uprooted definately it will make THUD on land.
Its like pulling down any other tree. Besides tree is not just single trunk, it has branches.

When there is thump do you know that all the forest creatures do panic. If animals could speak they would have called EMERGENCY tree falling help line

The tree falling produces waves in the air. Those waves are called sound waves. The sound waves exist whether or not anyone is around to hear them. If someone is around, their eardrums will pick up those sound waves and send the message to the brain which interprets what was heard.

only if there is any type of creature with an ear to absorb the sound waves that the tree gives off when it hits the ground. if there is no ear drum present the sound will resonate away....

sure, why not. Sound is only when we hear. There are sounds every where even in deep ocean. There is no one in the ocean now, does that mean there is not sound?? Birds are flying above the oceans, fish are swimming and whales are making sounds too!

You mean like yell for help or something? I don't think trees normally make sounds anyway.

No, it doesn't. But if a man stands in a forest and says something with no woman anywhere around to hear him - he's still wrong! : )

Yes. If I die in the middle of nowhere screaming of a painful heart attack, and no one can hear me, am I making any noise?
Yes, duh. This tree question is so stupid, why do so many pseudo-intellectuals ask it, do they really think it makes them smart and/or philisopical.
Want to know what IS intellectualy stimulating? Pondering the reproductive habits of bears if they're doing it in outerspace in tutus on rocket unicycles.
THAT'S ******* interesting.

If a book falls from your bookcase while you're out, does it make a sound?

The question is pointless, as is yours.
