diesel engines are alot better gas mileage wise..
and i believe theres more parts to a diesel then a standard engine..which is why there more expensive to maintain..but VW diesel is the most expensive to maintain.

there are 4-5 reasons why diesel engines are more expensive to maintain.
1) the fuel systems in a diesel engine are more sensitive to dirt and debris the holes on a diesel injector are very much smaller than on a gasoline injector so the fuel filter needs to be serviced/ replaced more often. about every 20k. miles. a diesel fuel filter also cost more than a gasoline because they have more elements that filter the fuel.
2) Diesel engines rely on combustion only no spark needed to fire the fuel /air mixture. so the air supply is more critical for a diesel engine the air filter needs to be replaced every 20k. they generally are the same price.
3) instead of spark plugs a diesel has glow plugs these are used only when the vehicle is first starting they it is very critical that they work in the winter than it is in the summer for obvious reasons. they generally last longer than a spark plug but are aprox twice to three times as much in price.
4) most diesel engines hold more oil than a gasoline engine because they generally have a turbo which requires additional oil that a non turbo gas would have. on vw diesel they recommend that syn oil is used which is also another increase in the price of maint. on model 2004 and vw with the pumpaduse engine they require a higer grade engine oil than the prevous diesel engines because the injectors are located under the valve cover and operated by the cam.

Over the life of an engine, maintenance costs on diesels should be significantly less than gas engines.
Gas engines have spark plugs and ignition systems. Depending on the spark plug type, you might need a tune-up every 30K miles. Replace spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and coil from time to time.
Diesels don't have ignition systems because the fuel is ignited by compression, not by spark. A diesel "tune-up" consists of oil, air and fuel filter changes.
As another writer previously mentioned, diesel engines have much stronger blocks and internal components because of their high compression ratios. A passenger car diesel engine can last 250K miles or more before a major rebuild. Some truck diesels will last 300-500K miles before rebuilds. But that doesn't increase the maintenance cost.
Not sure where you got the maintenance cost information.
The purchase cost of a diesel will be higher than a gas - no question. Mainly due to heavier blocks, higher pressure/more complex fuel pumps, and most importantly, lower production volumes. But that is not your question.

Diesel engines are built with tougher parts. and are built to last longer With gasoline engines fuel is burned with a spark plug. Diesel engines need compression and thats why they are more heavy duty.

lots relies upon at this style of employing you do. the reason that diesel engines final see you later is they do no longer look to be close off very in many cases. With the recent idling regulations that are cropping up in all places that's no longer genuine anymore. between the biggest issues that effect the engine is throughout the time of start up. The greater you start up your engine the shorter the life span.

This is not true.
The only thing you have to change in a diesel engine is oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and drain the fuel water separator every time is necessary.

I think they're more expensive to maintain because less people are knowledgible about them than regular gas engines.
