Make a list of all the positive things that will come about when you make healthy changes. Reward yourself for doing well. When you mess up, forgive yourself and hit the reset button!

By following the guideline given in this proverb.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 7 Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.

In other words, store up God's word in your heart and whenever it comes time to make a choice follow the guidelines in it. There are too many to go into here, but prayer is one of the major ones. Instead of doing something you shouldn't, tell God about it and ask Him to help you find something else to do. Don't prioritize things of this world over time spent reading the Bible or going to church or fellowshiping with Christians or serving in some volunteer ministry. Make sure that you have been born again and receive the Holy Spirit or you will be like this man Jesus spoke about.

Matthew 12:43 "When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. 44 Then it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation."

If you just try on your own to clean up the house of your life and don't fill in the vacuum with the Holy Spirit and Christ honoring activites you will just fall back into your old bad habits and get even worse as you despair of trying anymore.

You can't....until you DO want to.
That's the key to overcoming anything. You have to make a choice and stick with it. You have to want the benefits more than you want the bad habit.

Envision all the things you could be doing if you were stronger and not out of breath, overweight or wasting your life away on the couch. You can get so out of shape that you think resting is the only way to feel better...which, of course, only makes the condition worse. You have to start somewhere or you'll never get anywhere.

Do it without telling anyone....it generally takes 21 days to develop a habit...and three times as long to break one that you already have.

So if its quitting smoking quit cold turkey. Same for the rest of it. Just need to put one foot in front of the other and DO IT.

Do it 18 times and it is a habit.

you got to have motivation. Sometimes negative news will reinforce you. For example, if you have high cholesterol and you don't care about it, you probably don't create better eating habit. However, if you know someone who died from heart attack because of high cholesterol. You will be scared, and you will forced to start the habit.
