What do you feel is the reason there has been such a decline in in etiquette and morals in the USA over the past half century?

I'm working to plan a wedding and in my researcha nd planning, I have heard some real horror stories about RUDE hosts and RUDE guests. Why doesn't anyone know how to conduct themselves anymore? It is so frustrating.

Probably because they weren't taught any better and if they were, they spent most of their life in an environment where etiquette wasn't an issue, and you know how the saying goes, monkey see monkey do.

Are you really sure this has changed over the last half century? People of every era think theirs is the most moral in decline whereas we see over time society getting more moral. Maybe you are comparing past etiquette to the ideals protrayed on old television and writings and not on how the common people behaved.

Well, I follow the ones I know...but I do not know many. So I would have to say that is why. A decline of generations passing along the rules of Etiquette.

my opinion is that after the Viet Nam skirmish men didn't come back from war and women had to raise their children by themselves and be both mother and father to the child/children, and go out to work to support the children. And, they tried to make the children happy so they spoiled them. The children had little supervision (so the morals lowered), and with the mothers working and having little time to spend with their children the children's education suffered, but there was no time left to teach them etiquette.

In addition, there used to be Emily Post, Dear Abby, Dr. Crane, Ann Landers and others who used to write books and articles about etiquette. You don't hear much about them anymore....maybe they aren't around anymore.

There are people who do know how to act;Carolina and Reynaldo Herrera have exquisite manners,as do their children.Unfortunately, too many people feel entitled to be rude. What is really needed is that people slow down and pay attention;all this rushing about does no good.Everything suffers, just not manners, when done at a hurried pace.

The rise of the middle class... the expansion of the middle class... the american dream

when people who arent taught etiquette get money... how are they supposed to know how to act with etiquette?

or if people never get to do things where etiquette is prevalent how will they know when to do it, and what to do?

I think people have become socially retarded. They live so much in their own little world, that they become the center of the world - and thus treat everyone poorly.

P.S. Good luck with your planning. It will all be worth it!

well, usually its because the are either living by themselves, with no one to care about their etiquette, or their parents never taught them how to conduct themselves properly

there have always been rude people, rude guests, rude hosts.

Some don't know any better, some don't care, and some think they are special and don't need to follow the rules.

Parents are not teaching their children simple manners anymore. They throw them in daycare and forget about them. We are not born with good manners. They have to be taught. No one is doing that anymore.
